Clinical Pharmacy
In the clinical
pharmacy unit at Baheya Hospital, we aim to provide complete pharmaceutical
care for breast cancer patients. The mission of the clinical pharmacy unit is
based on providing the necessary pharmaceutical services, especially
medications based on the patient’s needs. The duties of the clinical pharmacy unit
include:
Dispensing Pharmacy:
This pharmacy is
responsible for dispensing medications to breast cancer patients. The
pharmacist reviews the file of each patient and the medications prescribed by
the attending physician and dispenses the medications taking into consideration
the dose and duration of the treatment. Thus, it’s guaranteed that all patients
get a calculated amount of the medication until the next appointment in
the clinic.
Distributing IV Admixtures:
Prescription is reviewed
electronically via HIS to ensure the correct drug in the prescribed dose
using the appropriate diluents and by the correct route. The pharmacist is
also responsible for reviewing the intravenous treatment to guarantee the correct
dose and type as well as the purity of the treatment.
Preparing IV Admixtures:
The pharmacist in the clinical pharmacy
department follows the global guidelines and standards that ensure taking the
best steps to prepare a safe and sterilized medication with the highest level
of purity without any physical particles and residues. This is done by
preparing the medication in a sterilized room in a device designed for
medication preparation.
External Pharmacy:
The external clinic
pharmacist is mainly responsible for reviewing the medical record of the
patient and making sure of the accuracy of the medical history in addition to
reviewing all types of allergies and determining the actual or possible harmful
drug interactions.
One-day Unit
Pharmacist:
This pharmacist is
responsible for educating the patients and the rest of the medical team through
a daily regular tour. Any note or issue is reported immediately and added to
the patient’s medical record. Furthermore, the required course of chemotherapy
which includes (medications, doses, repetition, the minimum of dilutions, routes,
rate, and duration according to the infusion time) is reviewed according to each
protocol.
